Bhutanese Guides Embrace GNH Philosophy

July 21, 2025

The Gross National Happiness Centre Bhutan (GNHCB) successfully hosted a one-day GNH Learning Session for 48 tourist guides, held at the Guide Association of Bhutan (GAB) Conference Hall. This session is part of a growing series of learning programs driven by overwhelming public interest in understanding and embodying GNH values in daily and professional life.

Participants explored how mindfulness, cultural pride, sustainability, equity, and compassion can enrich travelers’ experiences and deepen their own sense of purpose. Through interactive discussions, experiential learning, and heartfelt sharing, the session reaffirmed the crucial role guides play in representing Bhutan’s values to the world.

Highlighting this, GNHCB Executive Director Lhatu remarked, “Our guides are not just service providers; they are Bhutan’s storytellers and custodians of its wisdom. This session reminds us that GNH is not only a national vision but a lived practice that begins with each of us.”

Director Sonam Tsoki Tenzin opened the workshop with a session on the origin and everyday relevance of GNH. This was followed by a practical segment on communication etiquette for guides, led by GNHCB’s Communication Officer, Monica Rai, designed to help guides share Bhutan’s philosophy with authenticity and respect.

Participants expressed gratitude and enthusiasm, describing the workshop as inspiring and deeply relevant to their role in bridging cultures and values. Several guides shared that the session renewed their sense of responsibility to represent Bhutan not just through facts and history, but through kindness and mindful presence.

Others highlighted how the discussions on equity and compassion encouraged them to view their work as a service that extends beyond tourism to fostering mutual respect and understanding among diverse peoples.
