GNH Advocacy and Outreach Programme: Raising GNH-Consciousness in Youths

August 6, 2018

6 August 2018, Thimphu: The Gross National Happiness Centre Bhutan (GNHCB) will be  conducting a month-long GNH Advocacy and Outreach Programme in various schools, colleges and technical institutions of the nation. The programme is aimed at getting youths better connected to the concept of GNH, and to bring about an awareness regarding contemporary issues faced by youths in today’s world. The advocacy will start from 7th August 2018.

The GNHCB believes that it is essential to reach out to children in various educational institutions in the nation to promote GNH and its values as well as the events of GNHCB. The team plans to visit at least 7 colleges and about 12 schools throughout the country. Listed among the objectives of this programme are the introduction to GNH, the 4 pillars and the 9 domains; introduction to basic meditation sessions; the current youth issues in the nation, creation of GNH Clubs/projects in various institutions and enhancing the GNH Centre’s visibility and national efforts.

“The GNH Centre Bhutan believes that true happiness is not only ‘necessary’ but in all its meaningfulness, is viable and achievable,” said Soman Tsoki Tenzin, Offg. Executive Director of GNH Centre Bhutan. “Towards this end, the organization has initiated various programmes to help realize our collective dream of seeing a truly fulfilled society. This programme is one of them.”

“It is important for our youth to understand the sanguine values of Gross National Happiness and how our future can be aligned to its principles, keeping in mind aspirations of our leaders to see a truly happy society,” she said. The GNHCB also conducts other events and programmes focused at making youths better prepared for the future and making them shift their vision in line with the values of GNH. Intended to groom, guide and make the young Bhutanese realize their potential as future leaders, a workshop called GNH Youth Leadership Programme was recently concluded during the summer holidays. During the event, students from various colleges presented their own prototypes on how they see GNH being implemented in the grass root level. The GNHCB hopes to conduct various similar programmes in times to come.
